Each pair of young people from our different schools chose different experiences that they wanted to share with their peers, and spent some time reflecting on their cultural experiences and on the responsibility of spending the micro-grant.
Read on to hear from the one of the students from Cedar Mount Academy about visiting the theatre to see a production of 'Teechers':
How did you spend the money?
Me, Fifi and Miss Allen discussed on what to spend the money on and decided that it would be best spent on a trip to the theatre for the school's Drama students during school hours. We took a coach ride to Bolton to watch a play called ‘Teechers’. This piece is about three actors multi-rolling between students and teachers, the actors were sort of mocking both roles in a hilarious yet accurate way. It was incredibly fun to watch as many people couldn’t stop laughing at the subtle jokes being made, some of the characters went from a strict teacher to a roadman student to then a flamboyant professor, it was extremely entertaining and they continuously had the audience entertained. Whilst having comedy it also showed us a reality that occurs in the real world about some certain teachers seeing the ‘naughty’ children as a nuisance and not offering them any additional help, most of those teachers move to a richer school chasing after a higher pay.
Why did you choose to do this activity?
We chose this trip to give the experience of the theatre to drama students in our school. I appreciated this play as it gave us a meaningful message while also delivering laughs to everyone in the audience.
What areas of creative leadership did your activity cover?
This activity covered creativity and leadership, 51 students took part in this, mostly Year 10 Drama students but also Year 9 students who picked Drama as a GCSE option and Year 7s who enjoy the subject. We had four staff members with us.
What did you enjoy about the activity?
From this activity it certainly helped me become more ambitious, the way they presented themselves inspired me to better my acting and to display more confidence on stage. Their acting has also helped me realise the flaws in mine, I now know how to improve it and appreciate it even more. I enjoyed many things in this trip, the show itself was comedic and light-hearted, it had many different songs in between their sets, the music used between sets were ones that many people age twelve to fifteen were familiar with. Since we knew them, it made it relatable and enjoyable.
How has your experience as Creative Leaders helped you make decisions leading to this activity?
My experience at Creative Leaders has definitely helped sharpen up my leadership skills as it has improved my confidence and communicating with new people I have never met before. One of my peers, in Year 10 told me that she enjoyed the humour, the play was quite accurate to real life and appreciated the minimal number of props and characters as it wasn’t too overstimulating. Another one of my friends, also in Year 10, she mentioned that she thought it was pretty funny and found it helpful as it gave her ideas on future performances. Overall, everyone gave positive feedback, they all enjoyed this experience, we would love to experience something similar again and appreciate having had such an opportunity.
