This Is Us - Day 1: Is Manchester a welcoming city?

The day began with a visit to the plaque and an interactive icebreaker setting a positive and open tone. Reece then introduced the historical context of the Congress, highlighting its significance and lasting impact. Students worked in pairs to build glossaries of key terms, supporting their understanding before being introduced to the project’s central question: Is Manchester a welcoming city?

A “vote on your feet” debate encouraged students to reflect on whether Manchester is a place of welcome, prompting respectful discussion and a range of perspectives.

Students also visited the Archives at Manchester Library, where they explored historical materials and investigated how key moments in Manchester’s past are remembered.

The workshop concluded with a creative writing task, allowing students to thoughtfully respond to the day’s learning.

The end of the month will see the final workshop take place, with students creating audio pieces in response to the project's investigative question.
