Following our introductory sessions at HOME Manchester, our cohort of 20 Creative Leaders have now completed their second session of the programme. In October, we visited Z-arts to focus on the theme of Leadership, and to give the group a closer look at how creative spaces support and encourage different leadership styles.

Starting with Movement & Teamwork

The session opened with some light tableau freeze-frame activities. These simple, playful exercises helped the group warm up, work together, and build confidence before moving into the rest of the day. It was a relaxed way to get everyone comfortable and ease into the theme of leadership through collaboration.

Leadership at Z-arts

After the warm-up, the group took part in activities designed to encourage them to think about leadership in different ways — not just as taking charge, but as listening, sharing responsibility, supporting others, and communicating clearly. These discussions and tasks helped them start identifying the leadership skills they already have and the areas they want to develop further.

The group also explored Z-arts’ Adventures in Wonderland experience. The interactive, imaginative installations gave the young people a chance to try things out, express themselves creatively, and think about how environments like these can help people build confidence and communicate more openly.

Behind the Scenes

Z-arts CEO Liz O’Neill gave the cohort a full tour of the building, including the art and dance studios, theatre spaces, music recording rooms, and media suite. This offered a useful look at the variety of roles and opportunities within a creative venue.

The group asked thoughtful questions throughout, and several young people showed interest in possible volunteering or work experience in the future — a strong sign that the visit helped them understand the pathways available in the creative sector.

Continuing the Journey

Our Schools Partnership Programme is now well underway, with staff from the 10 partner schools helping the Creative Leaders reflect on their experiences between sessions and link their learning back to the classroom.

The cohort has also begun working on their Learner Profiles, developed with the Rethinking Assessment team. These profiles will support them in tracking their skills, setting goals, and recognising their growth as the programme continues.

Looking Ahead

With the Leadership session complete, the group will move on to exploring new themes in the months ahead. Each session will introduce them to different parts of Manchester’s cultural landscape while building confidence, skills, and connections.
